Type of Cats & Dogs

Dogs

There are over 157 different types of dogs recognized by the American Kennel Club. The following article covers a list of different types of dogs with pictures that will help you identify these faithful and loving pets.

Dogs are man's best friends! This old statement has been proven correct time and again by these faithful companions. Just as there are different types of people there are different types of dogs. Each dog has it own unique characteristic like size, appearance, temperament, health, grooming requirements, etc. Each type of dogs have a history of origin and lineage. Depending on your wants and expectations from a pet dog, choose a dog with characteristics that match your requirements. This article will cover all types of dogs with pictures. I have divided the list of different dogs based on their breed groups.

Dog breeds are categorized into different groups, based on the purpose for which each dog was developed originally. The American Kennel Club(AKC) recognizes 7 dog breed groups. Let me introduce you with the list of types of dogs, with pictures in each group. The actual numbers of the types of dog breeds within each of the different dog types are as follows:
  • Sporting Dogs ( Gun Dogs) - 26
  • Non-Sporting Dog Types - 17
  • Working Dog Breeds - 22
  • Hound Breed Type of Dogs - 22

Cats

So you thought that cats were only categorized by breed? Well, there are 3 different types of cats as well - pedigree, cross-breed and non-pedigree.

You might have an idea of the type of cat that you are looking for, but you must remember that cats are living creatures with their own characters and temperaments.

What is also important to remember is that the cat you choose will very likely be a part of your family for the next 10-15 years.

A cat's character is not necessarily determined by its breed, but more by the way you handle and treat your cat. You might be thinking what the differences are and which type of cat is better?

Even though a pedigree cat will cost you more initially to acquire, the feeding and caring costs will be the same as for a non-pedigree. Non-pedigree cat types are considered to be hardier than their pedigree counterparts.
